Dental implants are an increasingly popular solution to missing teeth, and one that provides a comfortable, realistic replacement. In this post, we’ll let you know what to expect if you’re going to be getting a dental implant.

What Are Dental Implants?

An implant is a titanium post that serves as an artificial tooth root. The dentist surgically inserts the implant into the jaw bone where the tooth root once was. Once the area is allowed to heal, a custom replacement tooth is then affixed to the implant, leaving the patient with a beautiful, sturdy new tooth with a natural look. Implants have been around in various forms for centuries, but modern dentistry has truly perfected the procedure, making implant a much-favored way to replace a tooth. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, 3 million Americans have dental implants.

Evaluation

Before an implant can be put in place, you will need to be evaluated by your dentist. Your dentist will need to take a look at your overall oral health, as well as the health of your jawbone. A healthy jawbone is imperative to successful dental implants.

Procedure

During a dental implant procedure, a titanium post, that looks and works much like a screw, is inserted into the jaw bone. The implant will eventually fuse to the jaw bone, providing a sturdy base for the new tooth. The dentist will first need to remove the old tooth root and perform a bone graft if necessary. After a period of healing, your dentist will have you back to install the implant. Once that heals, and the implant begins to fuse with the jawbone, the custom tooth is attached to the implant. The timeline will vary from patient to patient.
